Phoenicia Specialty Foods – 1001 Austin Street, Houston, TX 77010
Looking to shake up your typical trip to the grocery store? We don’t blame you, as it has become the main outing for many Americans each week. So, why not give Phoenicia Specialty Foods a shot? With two locations, this popular, niche grocery store is fully stocked with produce, butcher cuts, and deli meats, pantry items, prepared foods, beer, and much more. Plus, you can try all of their in-house specialty items, such as babaganoush, olive tapenade, freshly baked salmon, slow-roasted lamb shank, and all of the baklava your little heart desires. At the Downtown location, you can also grab food-to-go at MKT BAR, a global gastropub attached to the grocery store itself. Try their international twist on Weekend Brunch or their Tuesday/Thursday Steak Nights, and you won’t be disappointed!
Broham’s Fine Soul Food & Groceries – 517 Berry Road, Houston, TX 77022
Although this new spot by Chef Johnny Rhodes came to fruition in the wake of COVID-19, Broham’s Fine Soul Food & Groceries had been a long-time dream of the acclaimed chef. It had always been Chef Rhode’s intention to open up a self-sustainable grocery store in the heart of Trinity Gardens, where he grew up. Once considered a food desert, Broham’s now offers the neighborhood produce sourced from local farms, as well as signature goods from Rhodes’ neo-soul kitchen, such as Creole pickles, frozen King crab clusters, and cracked-black-pepper-rubbed roast beef. The grocer, open from 10 AM to 7 PM Tuesday through Sunday, is aiming to “combat food apartheid and inequality, while inspiring the community to cook from home,” and it looks like Rhodes is already successful in his mission.
H-E-B – Multiple Locations Throughout the Greater Houston Metro Area
There might not be any Texas retailer that takes of Texans quite as H-E-B does, which is why they’ve made it to our list, despite being a much larger entity than our two previous grocers. From the beginning of the pandemic, H-E-B took serious measures, including purchase limits, plexiglass shields, and social distance stickers, to promote the best interests of its customers and staff. The grocer giant also expanded their hours for curbside delivery, added doorstep delivery (which was completely free-of-charge to seniors and only five-bucks for all other customers), and waived personal shopper fees. Not to mention, you get text updates of your order’s progress – pretty tech-savvy, huh? As the Texas chain always says, “No store does more than my H-E-B,” and it couldn’t be more accurate.
