Now that 2021 is officially in full swing, it’s easy to fall back into old habits and indulge in the barbecue, Mexican, and other HTX specialties that have our mouths watering just considering their deliciousness. Trying to be more conscious about what you put in your body? Well, keep in mind that healthy doesn’t have a single definition. For some, it means sticking to a more veggie-oriented lifestyle, like vegetarian or vegan, while others consider it to be a more integrative nutritional plan, like paleo or keto.
If you are looking to change the tone of your meals with something fresh and healthy, look no further than these Houston restaurants that serve dishes made with fresh, nutrient-packed ingredients, which will both nourish both your body and please your taste buds.
Flower Child – 1101 Uptown Park Boulevard #C-6, Houston, Texas 77056
Flower Child is a health-oriented restaurant chain with some serious pizazz. Take the term “power lunch” to a whole new level, with their menu of salads, wraps, and bowls that are packed with superfood ingredients, such as kale, avocado, sweet potato, and so much more! One of our favorites is the spicy “Forbidden Rice” bowl, made with black pearl, red japonica, bok choy, broccoli, carrot, onion, toasted sesame, and red chili hoisin! Frequent patrons are also said to enjoy The Rebel, a wrap with grilled steak, charred onion, port salut cheese, arugula, and horseradish yogurt. Best of all, Flower Child has its own app, which makes healthy eating even easier – and more rewarding – than ever before.
Verdine – 449 W 119th Street, Suite C-200, Houston, Texas 77008
More traditional American dishes, like cheeseburgers, hot chicken sandwiches, and short ribs, are made without meat at the all-vegan establishment, Verdine. Their small plates are also causing quite a bit of chatter, including the White Cheddar Mac, Orange Cauliflower, and Everyday Miso Soup. The mains and sides that have captured our heart and palette include the savory carnitas made with slow-cooked pulled jackfruit, the eggplant parmigiana pizza built on a cauliflower crust and sweet potato fries presented with house-made raisin-sweetened organic ketchup. As if the menu couldn’t get any more scrumptious, there are rotating selections of gluten-free cake slices and cookies to top off your meal.
